Emperor Ogbonna Kalu

This evening, I was shocked with the news that Assemblies of God church has suspended and removed its General Superintendent, Chidi Okoroafor.
Many people did not know of this so when I broke the news, there were mixed reactions.
I decided to make some enquiries.
I decided to make some enquiries because I am involved.
I was born a Catholic but after I passed through a spiritual journey, I joined Assemblies of God church.
The church was a symbol of holiness.
The church was not playing with sin.
Commit sin and you are given a back seat.
Simple.
But as time went on, the church allowed itself to be pulled down by politics.
That was why I left.
I remember coming to church and instead of being inundated with the word of God, church politics and misguided pastors were the orders of the day.
One day, I took my wife and children and left Assemblies of God church, vowing never to return.
Before I left, I had been a member of the church board, a Sunday school teacher, a men's fellowship president, a deacon and a youth leader.
I was even the Chairman of the church fund raising committee that bought the land where the Assemblies of God church Pound Road Aba (near the High Court ABA) was built.
I left and joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Soon after I left the church became involved in the leadership tussle between Paul Emeka and Chidi Okoroafor.
The battle was dirty, and somewhat, I was glad I had left.
But today, I am glad that the glory of God has returned to Assemblies of God.
Why did I say that?
The events of the last one week proves me right.
In the last three months, there was this rumour that the General Superintendent of the church was involved in a relationship with a woman.
The former General Superintendent of the church Rev Osueke, called Rev Chidi Okoroafor and told him of what he heard.
Rev Chidi Okoroafor did not deny it, nor confirm it.
As the rumour continued, the Executive committee and General Council of the church set up a committee headed by one Rev Mpamugo, an incorruptible man, and of which the legal adviser of the church was a member, and their mandate was to look into the allegation.
Chidi Okoroafor was invited to Lagos, Enugu etc to defend himself and he came.
Text messages were read and CCTV videos were seen.
Hotels were visited too.
As this investigation was going on, a guy who is also the media aide to the Abia State speaker, was busy using his Facebook wall and his Reports to malign the leadership of Assemblies of God and the members of that panel.
So this week, the leadership of Assemblies of God Divinity School Old Umuahia wrote a letter to the guy stopping him from being a student of that school and stopping his training as a pastor of the Assemblies of God.
Yesterday, the General Council of the Assemblies of God church met, considered the report of the committee and decided to follow its constitution.
Rev Chidi Okoroafor was not caught having sex with any woman.
He was not caught in adultery.
He was suspended because he was guilty of appearance of sin.
Any member of AG would understand what appearance of sin is.
Under Assemblies of God church, you don't need to commit sin to be punished.
Once the circumstances suggest that you MAY commit sin or might have committed sin, or is in a position where U may commit sin, you are suspended.
The argument of the church is that such a sin should not be named or even attributed to a Christian, let alone he be suspected of it or committing it.
And when Chidi Okoroafor was confronted with the panel report, he did the right thing.
He and his wife knelt down and asked for forgiveness, and he said that he ought to be removed absolutely, and not suspended.
The leadership of the church said no, that it's constitution says that anyone who is guilty should be suspended for five years, and that the Constitution must be obeyed.
It is that same constitution that made the church to remove Paul Emeka who took the church to court when it's constitution says that nobody should take the church to court.
So that was how the GS of that church was suspended for five years and removed as the General Superintendent.
When other churches would have tried to protect its head from scandal and punishment, Assemblies of God church decided to set an example with its head, and decided that nobody is above discipline.
That is the mark of Christ.
Those who are saying that Chidi Okoroafor was not given fair hearing or was removed due to politics, are telling lies.
The people that removed Chidi Okoroafor are the same people that had been with him all through these years Paul Emeka was fighting that church.
I commend the leadership of Assemblies of God church Nigeria for standing on holiness and it's precepts.
Paul Emeka was removed for breaking it's constitution, Chid Okoroafori was punished in accordance with God's standard of holiness.
The church of God is moving on.
In the race of every Christian, there is no assurance that it shall ever be easy.
We are all mortals and can make mistakes.
This is not the end of Rev Dr Chidi Okoroafor. The Bible says that the righteous falleth seven times and still rise again.
Right now, the leadership of that church has taken a step many churches in Nigeria cannot take.
In my life as a lawyer, I have seen things.
I have actually seen things so if a church can decide to punish it's head, in a society that church leaderships and clergymen cover their sins and that of their leaders, then I think that the glory of God has returned to Assemblies of God Church. As General Superintendent Of Assemblies Of God
